Analysis of JLS Concert Advertisement

This advert has got a running theme of the colour purple which can appeal to both genders, but it is generally a more feminine colour.  This is because JLS appeals mainly to women as it is a boy band.  The poster has the name of the company at the top, this is to show who has organized the event, and they also want to show the consumer that it is a genuine concert.  They have put the JLS logo on the advert to  allow the consumer to recognize the poster quickly and this will let the consumer know who the advert is about.  This logo at the top allows the audience to quickly recognize the band.  The picture is there to show how fit they are and show them as desirable objects, this picture appeals to the target audience of women.  Voyeurism  is shown in the image mainly by Aston having his shirt unbuttoned showing his chest.

The centre of the advertisement shows special guests that will be playing at the performance.  This will attract fans of those performers, particularly Olly Murs. The second supporting act is an artist that is newly being introduced, because of this her name is not written in bold on the advertisement, this means that Olly Murs name will stand out in that section and people will go to see the concert to see him and then will be seeing JLS as well.  There are pictures of the supporting acts to show the audience what the acts look like.

The bottom of the advertisement shows the information needed by the audience to see the concert such as; where it is being held and the dates, this is written in a larger font so that it stands out.  The Heart Radio logo is shown at the bottom this is to show that they are supporting the concert.

Analysis of a JLS Music Video

This song was done for Children in Need 2010 by JLS, it is called Love You More.

The monochrome effect is used throughout the video. This is to show the emotion of the song. They also keep the visual blurred or out of focus a lot, this could be to show that the characters are trying to hide their emotions or to emphasize them.

This song fits the genre because:

  • There is a combination of the band members being shown on there own and together as a group.
  • There is emotion in the song.
  • They used editing techniques to emphasize emotion.
  • They wear conventional clothing for the type of song, the clothing is very thick and they tend to wear a lot of layers. This could be show that they are protecting themselves from something, according to the lyrics this could be some form of emotion.

There are several close-ups of individual band members and the band as a whole. This would be because of the record label wanting to make sure that people know what the members look like so that they are recognizable by the public.

Our Song Choice

We have chosen the song Strange by JLS.

Our ideas for this song are;
  • Classic cheesy boy band video or spoof video e.g. funny costumes
  • Costumes - would be the typical boy band look which would consist of low jeans, baggy tops, gelled hair.
  • Props - A boy band, actors, actresses, phone,
  • Location - Isolated locations such as empty fields, sitting by windows, empty rooms etc... We will keep the location simple, preferably the area will be isolated and empty to fit with conventions.
  • Performers/performances - look of despair, emotion, air grab, lots of camera time/ looking at camera, lots of emotion when singing.
  • Lighting - We will use lighting relevant to the lyrics, this will fit with Goodwin's points.
  • Mood/Atmosphere - emotional, passionate, misery
  • Lots of close-ups to show emotion in faces, long shots to show locations and costumes.
  • Editing: We will use black and white to fit with genre conventions. We will only use t for part of the song to show heavy emotion.
This image shows the typical boyband clothing.

Analysing a Digi Pack - Steps

When we analysed the Steps 'Gold Greatest Hits' we found that, the font was used because it is very easy to read and this would appeal to their target audience of children.   The picture on the front of the digi pack is very symmetrical, this is eyecatching to children and this means it can be processed easier.  The colour gold has been used and this fits with the album title, we think this would appeal to their target audience as many children wish to be sophisticated and gold has the connotations of a sophisticated look, also the colour gold might make children feel they are buying something with importance.

The back of the digi pack is very easy to read and aimed specifically for the target audience, the font is in capitals to make the letters stand out.  The colour scheme of black, white and gold are all contrasting colours and work well to create a more sophisticated and outstanding look.  The pictures on the back help to promote the product by making it look fun and colourful to the audience.

The same colour theme is used inside the digi pack too, this gives a running theme which makes it recognisable especially to the target audience.

Analysing 50 Cent in Relation to Goodwin

Before starting this analysis, i would like to highlight that this video represents everything that is wrong with music and society in the modern world.

In the 50 Cent "In Da Club" video it represents not only 50 Cent but Exhibit, Dr Dre and Eminem. All these artists are working together to make 50 Cent work out and become the 'image' they want him to be represented as, a typical, muscular, black, 'gangsta' rapper. This is an archetype of what rap artists are thought of these days.

The song talks about being 'In Da Club' and this is where 50 is seen for the duration as well as a few shots of him pumping iron in the gym. There are also a few shots of the typical rapping to the camera looking SWAAGG.

Analysing Digi-Packs

We think that digi-Packs should contain the full album of the artist as a start. Other additional features should be computer wallpapers, as well as live video's of the band/artist, music videos, a booklet perhaps containing lyrics/artwork. the case should also contain the band/artist name, record label, producer/mixer, parental guidance (if applicable), track listing, album/feature name and copyright information.

Products relating to the bands album/single/DVD should all have a running theme throughout. this should include:
  • The same fonts
  • Same style artwork
  • Same colour theme
  • Same overall message
  • Same quality production value.

These were the photo's we collected off of the 'Bullet For My Valentine' Digi-pack album 'The Poison'. the first picture shows the digital feature on the computer which includes backstage and live footage of the band at download festival, two wallpapers. This is what we would expect to find in a good digi-pack. The other photo's also show a running theme throughout the CD case, cover and CD. These items show the sustaind red colour theme, similar font's, album artwork, and typical pictures of the band in the booklet.

Analysing a Digi-Pack

The conventions of a digi pack:

  • Picture of the artist
  • List of songs/videos on the back of the pack
  • There is always the name of the artist and the name of the CD
  • There is usually a guidance certificate on the front
  • There are usually pictures on the back from the actual CD
  • There is a running theme of the same colours throughout
  • It usually relates to the actual CD
  • There is a description on the back
  • There is a website on the back to advertise
  • There is also the record companys website
  • The spine has the artists name and the name of the CD on it, and also the DVD logo
  • Inside the digi pack there is usually adverts for the artists
  • Inside there is also tour dates, to advertise
  • The CD is enclosed inside
How the products should link together:
  • The same picture of the artist for the front
  • The same font/colour
  • The same track listings on the back
  • Usually adverts on the inside
  • The same artist and title names

Analysing Music Videos

A Spoof Video

Stewie Griffin - Everything I Do - Spoof Video
This is a spoof of Bryan Adams' Everything I Do  in the animated series Family Guy. This video is filmed as  a traditional cheesy love song which follows a narrative. This video portrays Stewie as a gentle, loving person which would meet the demands of the record label should this actually be recorded for a label, but it is not, its a comedy animation.  The video contains a range of camera shots and transitions such as dissolves and contains traditional music video themes such as unrealistic scenarios. This particular version of the song on youtube has over 106000 views so the video is quite successful.

Black Eyed Peas - Where Is The Love - Video With A Message
This video generates a very strong message to the audience, a call for unity and equality amongst the world. This video displays a strong link between the lyrics and the visuals, which is one of the Goodwin Points, which adds to the video's success. The video is well edited, and there are lots of cuts on the beat, which camera shots that exploit every angle, which what the song is about. Lots of close-up shots are used to show a range of people from different ethnic backgrounds and beliefs, which adds to the message being conveyed. The video represents the band as a strong unit, with a strong moral belief for equality. This also shows the band to be caring and fighters for what they believe in. This video is very successful, with over 45 Million views on youtube.

Eminem - Stan - A Video That Is Shocking
This video is a hard hitting drama about an obsessive Eminem fan that ends up getting drunk and drugged up and drives a car off a bridge with his pregnant girlfriend in the boot, all because Eminem was too busy to answer the fan mail that he was sent. The mise-en-scene is very dark, the lighting is limited to add an eerie feel to the video. Eminem is represented as a considerate man with his advice that he gives Stan in the fourth verse, offering him help and guidance. The video is moderately successful, and there are many censored and shortened versions that have massed millions of views.

Analysis of Music Videos

1) A Spoof Video

In this music video we can clearly see the typical conventions of a spoof video, for example they have exaggerated their movements and connections with the camera. They have followed the typical mise-en-scene by bright lighting, matching costumes, the location is simple and they have used a variety of props which spoofs often do.  This spoof video uses a variety of different camera shots, like close-ups, mid shots of the group and there are lots of handheld shots which is a typical convention of a spoof video. There are many cuts in the video which works well with the mise-en-scene to show the different locations and costumes.

2) A video with a message

This video has the message of getting help for domestic violence, we can tell this by the actions in the video and the message at the end. For the mise-en-scene the cotumes are casual to show that they are an ordinary family. The lighting is dark when the abuse is happening to show the emotions, and brighter when things are ok with the family.  The location is set in their family home, to show that this type of violence is most common in homes where no one can help you, also part of it is set in prison to show that things can be sorted out if people speak up.  There are fast cuts when the violence is happening which creates tension, however, there are slower cuts when things are better to show how its covered up.  The acting in this video is of a high standard which helps the audience relate to the message given out.  There are alot of close-ups to show tension and emotion, and lots of mid shots to show when the abuse is happening.

3) A video that shocks you

4) A video that presents an artist in a way we aren't used to seeing them

In this video miley cyrus is represented in a way we haven't seen her before, for example her costume is quite revealing for her age and her previous image.  Also she's wearing quite a bit of make-up and we aren't used to seeing her like this.  In the video, she does dance routines and actions that are completely different to how she used to be represented (Hannah Montana).  The lighting in this video is really dark to give off the dark side to her (again we have never seen this before).  She uses poles as a prop to dance around, which is advanced for her age group as we know her as a young childrens singer. The location is in a zoo, and it fits in with the lyrics 'can't be tamed' because she is being portrayed as being a wild animal.

Practice Magazine Advert

We chose to use this picture of Rihanna because it shows the image that she is very confident and doesn't mind exposing herself.  We chose the colour red because it has the connotations of danger and it makes her stand out.  Also the colour red is quite a romantic colour and from this picture we know that she will appeal to a variety of audiences but in particular young men.  We made the font match the picture so it has housestyle and it looks more professional.  We chose to use a parental guidence logo because some parents may find images too exposed for their children and also some lyrics could offend some people.
We put on def jam logo as Rihanna is representing them. We added in a 5 star rating by Q magazine to show that this single is rated highly, and a professional opinion will be important to listeners.

Sam and Jack Photoshop Task

We were asked to make a magazine advert promoting a new single of an artists video that we had already watched. We did this task to enhance our skills on photo-shop. We kept our design simple but sophisticated.

Auteur Theory

The term Auteur Theory reflects the directors personal creative vision.  This term is from the french word for author which is Auteur.  Being an Auteur means that audiences can recognise their work from their personal style, for example Tim Burton's films can be clearly recognised from his distinct characteristics, such as 'The Corpse Bride' and 'Coraline'.

The Auteur Theory, is a theory derived by Andre Bazin in the 1960's who was a film critic who wrote for and edited Cahiers du cinema.
